trace the curve
of the sheets
the riddle of the desire
when I watch you sleeping

Badger was gone for a week. I drove hours and hours to see him on Friday. He greeted me with a bouquet of flowers and an empty pie plate—which is a very sweet gesture if you understand my short-term crush with Weebl and Bob.

We made love in the king-sized bed of the hotel he'd been staying at all week, and the closeness was sweet, almost enough to break your heart.

I keep listening to this song by the Toadies and thinking of him, of that moment.

On Monday, I woke with him in my own bed and realized I was taking him for granted. All those little romantic things you do when you're dating someone new, I was letting them fall away. I realized I needed to tend the garden better. But with him, it's an easy garden to tend. The flowers grow of their own accord. All I need to do is pull aside the weeds from time to time.
