Since springtime and summer came so late, don't you think it would be possible to delay autumn by just a few weeks? I'm walking around in a sweater and wool-blend pants. It's just not right!

Not that I have much to complain about. This weekend was gorgeous. Crazy, but gorgeous. Three new people moved into my place in Cambridge. Three old people moved out. My cutting board—one of the few quality kitchen utensils I possess, and which was given to me by a boyfriend back in college—has gone missing.

I retreated out to the green leafy suburbs with my new sweetheart. We nestled like spoons under the eaves of his house. We went for long walks, and dragged a canoe into the pond in the back of his house. We ate artery-choking food, and generally marveled at how easy it was to spend time together. We took a spontaneous drive to the ocean. It was idyllic.

When I got back, there were seven messages on my voicemail from variously irate and confused new roommates. I'm not sure what they expected me to do about the crud my previous roommates had left behind. But I did indeed show up on Monday evening to clean and straighten—and most importantly, to spend time with these new people who are sharing my space.

Badger helped me clean without even being asked. I turn around one minute, and he's putting furniture together for me. The next, he's mopping the floor. He even took a sponge to the 2-year-old congealed collection of crud in the door of the refrigerator. Then he goes and orders Chinese food, and pays for it before I can even say anything.

Now that's a keeper.
