August 18, 2003 Yes, it's true: the perfect woman does not exist. All those images we see in magazines, on TV, in the newspapers, on the sides of buses, they're digitally fucking manipulated. Check out this link and you'll see what I mean: http://homepage.mac.com/gapodaca/digital/bikini/index.html Thanks to Shannon, Lawrence Krubner, and Both2And for perpetuating this meme. Remuda Ranch puts out a great video that explores the connection between images in the media, women's perceptions of their bodies, and the rise in eating disorders. Not that Photoshop is an evil thingthat's like saying a hammer is evil. But really, people. Do we need to lie to ourselves like this, just to sell a fucking product? Will the entire world economy really fall apart if we sell a few less skin care products? If you're still not convinced, check out Greg's work on the shoe. Compare and contrast to the lovely model: http://homepage.mac.com/gapodaca/digital/shoe/index.html And finally, let me say that I in no way condemn Mr. Apodaca his choice of careers, nor his skill with digital retouching. I wish him a long, happy, and prosperous life in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mad props to him, in fact, for showing us a side of the fashion industry that's so often hidden.
