Eliza

Eliza was an experiment in characterization. She served as my alter ego between 1998 and 2000. Eventually, the lines between Eliza's thoughts and my own blurred so much that it stopped making sense for me to maintain her online diary.

Eliza's diary was called "Unpeeling the Onion" because it was an experiment in peeling back the layers of her character. It was featured in Diarist.net's Launch column in early 2000. The reviewer called me "an excellent writer" and used an excerpt from my own submission letter to describe the project:

I call it Unpeeling the Onion because the whole issue of how much of myself I bare is something I struggle with a lot these days. It's the journal of my alter ego, Eliza, because I respect the need for privacy of the people closest to me. Her life parallels mine, dances in and out of mine, sometimes serves as wish fulfillment, sometimes as worst-nightmare fulfillment.
